Adopting a cat - need help with decision

Hello!

My boyfriend and I are looking to adopt a cat and I had some questions.

So... I'm a massive dog person. My boyfriend is a cat person. He had a cat before who was very sweet, but didn't like to be held or cuddled. (Which is fair, cats come in different personalities).

While I respect every animal's need for space, having mostly had dogs I wish I could find a cat who was more physically affectionate. Getting a dog would not be a good decision for us because we cannot dedicate ourselves to the care that a dog needs. So as a middle ground we are looking for a cat with a more "friendly" personality. The kind that likes being held, cuddled, sits on your lap, and just a lot of physical affection. Is that even a thing?

How would you suggest going about identifying whether the cat will bond with us that way? Should we be looking to adopt kittens so that they can develop their personality while being around us, or go for adult cats that the adoption agency can help in describing their behaviour?

And of course, this is just a "nice to have". We would be happy with any cat really and love it just as much, but goddamn I miss cuddles.
