Any best to date, extensive guide to introducing a cat and a dog to eventually live together? And also do tall pet gates exist? Or something I can use or build as one?

So my partner and me want to live together eventually. He wants to be able to visit for longer periods of time. I have a dog, my brother's dog lives with us and my partner has a cat.

2 dogs 1 cat

It only really matters if my dog gets along with the cat. My dog is fine with chickens, just likes to make them jump sometimes. So I'm assuming a cat will be the same? My brother's dog however would bite feathers off of chickens so we haven't introduced her to chickens. My brother's dog would supposedly move out with him when he moves out though or when I move out his dog would would stay with him. We introduced my dog to my brother's dog last year and one is a lot bigger than the other (mine) but they seem to get along perfectly now, mostly just ignore each other now. Mine was really excitable and in my brother's dog face to begin with though, my brother's dog was shy.

They both go crazy and whine and tug when they see a cat on a walk and do not listen to a single thing I say. Although they both do this with other dogs too and even bark at other dogs which they don't do at cats. So the fact they treat cats more pleasantly on walks means it should be easier to train them to get along with cats than it was to each other right?

To begin with and maybe worst case long term scenario we will have to keep the pets separate with some kind of tall pet gate. I've been thinking of making one out of wire shelves and zip ties but is there a better option out there? Would it just be better to have a door frame fitted and to put a for or something there?

TL;DR -

  1. tips on how to introduce a playful, excitable Samoyed/bulldog cross dog to a timid, playful cat?

  2. Tips on finding a tall pet gate or making one that goes between two walls?
