Forgive the grim nature of this. I don’t know where else to ask.
My wife and I have a 17 year old mane coon. He is dying and we can’t afford to have him euthanized.
He’s skin and bone. He has no energy. He can barely move around the house anymore. He can’t eat cat food. We’ve been feeding him canned tuna and water because it’s literally all he can keep down anymore. He vomits up anything else we try to give him.
The vet said his kidneys are most likely failing. Possibly more. That’s what’s causing his issues. It’s not necessarily from a disease. He’s just really old and his organs are failing.
We can’t afford treatment, tests or even the euthanization. Tests to confirm kidney failure and possible treatment, it’s not guaranteed to help, would cost thousands of dollars. We have 3 kids and live off one income. It’s just not possible.
I’m not here to ask for money. I’m here to ask for advice.
What should we do? We don’t want him to suffer. He doesn’t seem to be in pain but you can absolutely tell he’s on his way out.
Do we just make him comfortable and hope it’s quick? I’m my experience, it isn’t quick.
Could a shelter possibly do it for a cheaper amount? The vet is asking $500 and that’s the cheapest of the 3 options. Cremation and what not.
We just don’t want the poor guy to suffer.
