I'm sorry this is so long but I am so worried about not being able to care properly for my cat. As mentioned, my poor sweet cat Cookie (2.5-year-old female tabby) was attacked by two loose dogs on Sunday afternoon. I brought her home around 10 pm Monday night after she was stable enough to go home. It's 1 am on Tuesday where I'm at right now, so she's been home for about 3 hours. Thankfully, I witnessed the attack (it happened in my yard) and was able to get the dogs off her quickly enough where her injuries weren't as bad as they potentially could have been, or worse. She has some minor injuries, but her worst injury is a bruised liver, which is slowly healing based on her most recent blood work.
The vet sent us home with 4 medications: pain medication, nausea/vomiting meds, an appetite stimulant, and a liver supplement to help her liver continue to heal.
She has not eaten since Sunday morning before the attack and refuses to eat, even after one dose of the appetite stimulant given at the vet. Her liver medication was due at 11 pm and my brother and I tried everything to administer the pill to her (pill pockets, scruffing, shooting into her mouth with a straw, mixing with some food) but nothing worked and she became very aggressive after several attempts. After talking to the vet less than an hour ago, we decided it would be best to try to give her the appetite stimulant in the morning (it's in a syringe so I'm hoping it'll be easier to administer) and then wait a bit and try a pill pocket with the liver supplement again.
I'm concerned because she is already pretty defensive and cautious as it is (she had a history of abuse before I adopted her a little over a year ago), but the attack seems to have made her even more on edge, even though she's pretty lethargic from her pain medication. She will not let us touch her and every time we try, she tries to attack us. If the appetite stimulant doesn't work, I have no idea how to get her to take that liver medication she needs so desperately to heal.
Does anyone else have a difficult feline who can give us some tips? The emergency vet said I can bring her back and they can give her the meds, but they'll charge me an arm and a leg (already racked up a $2000+ bill in less than 48 hours).
I called my regular vet on Monday to set up a follow-up because the emergency vet said I would need to follow up with her regular vet within 48 hours of discharge, but it turns out they decided to shut down permanently without informing their patients. I will call around in the morning to find a new vet. Is this something a regular vet can help me with? Like could they administer her meds to her if she's not eating? I know a regular vet would charge a much more reasonable fee. Any help would be appreciated.
TL;DR: Cat is home from the emergency vet after a dog attack and is on a lot of meds. She won't eat and we're having a really difficult time getting her to take her meds due to her aggression. Any advice would be appreciated.
