Diabetic cat getting worse in 2 weeks since diagnosis

tl;dr:

day 1: limping cat, diagnosed with diabetes (blood glucose (BG) 38)

day 2-3: great improvement after fluids

day 4-16: BG normal (4-5) but symptoms progressively getting worse: lost 1.2lbs, limp worsening, barely moves, barely eating or drinking, emaciated. Vet is not there when we get his BG check, vet techs don't seem to care about worsening condition

2 weeks ago, our 12 year old guy was diagnosed with diabetes. Took him to the vet for sudden severe limping and his BG was 38. He was doing really well for a couple days after the diagnosis- they gave him insulin and fluids.

Since then though his appetite has slowly withered away to nothing. He's barely eating or drinking, in just two weeks he's down from 9.5lbs to 8.3lbs. He's emaciated, at the worst times, he looks about 48 hours from death. It's terrifying. We've tried several different food brands, heating the food up, parm cheese, treats he was loving 2 weeks ago. He simply won't touch them except the odd time he'll have a few bites.

I've been giving him 1 unit of insulin every day after eating, as instructed by the vet. But these meals are getting progressively smaller. We've taken him back there to have his BG checked (7 and 14 days since). His BG is normal, if on the low end of normal. 38 (diagnosis) --> 5.2 (week one check up) --> 4.6 (week two check up)

I tell them I'm worried about the weight loss and they inform me that the vet who is overseeing his case is not even in today. It's just the vet tech checking his blood glucose. They say they'll call back and maybe the other vet will authorize giving him some sort of appetite stimulant. No call 2 days later and counting.

His limp that originally inspired the first trip to the vet has now gotten so bad he can barely walk. Again, I tell this to the vet tech but they don't seem to make any fuss about it and say he just needs to eat more. Ok great, but he won't.

Sorry this has gotten rambly. I'm just really stressed for the little guy. Should we be taking him to another vet or is all of this no big deal?
