How long in advance should I apply for adopt applications?

I'm planning to adopt a dog this August. Not something I've thought of lightly (part of the reason I am waiting- I'd like to be done my classes and be able to dedicate a good amount of time for training, bonding, setting a schedule/routine etc.). Money wise I am not worried (I'm not buying from a breeder and I'm going to get insurance- I work at a vet clinic so I've seen ppl get wiped out hella quickly. I've also applied and got a 5000$ CL on care credit just cuz I'd like to be prepared). I've also very much understood the needs of a dog. I have a dog at home (my parents home) which I will be moving out at the end of September, so I'm pretty familiar with the responsibilities needed to care for an INCREDIBLY high energy dog.

My question is when should I start applying? I want the dog by the second week of August (my school starts at the end of september) so that I'm able to dedicate 24/7 of my time with him to get him/her adjusted and trained. I ask bc I thought it took MONTHS but I applied for one, they already contacted, emailed me and said they think I'd be a good fit as long as I can come by and do a meet and greet and that goes well. They literally responded within a day, which had me shocked since most of the posts I've seen said that ppl are struggling to be able to adopt! I mean ofc I let them know I was looking for the fall which they were nice about, but still, I'd like to be prepared for a time line.

Few things- I'm looking for an adult dog, 2 yrs old+ pitbull/husky/GSD/ large breed (40-75lbs). I know what my dad had to do with my dog when he was a puppy and I don't wanna do that. I want to adopt the dog in August, when I'll be with my parents so my family's dog (3 yr old 80lb labradoodle) would need to do a meet and greet. We'd move out Sept 2021. My apartment complex already said it was fine for the dog, regardless of breed so I'm good there.

Any help would be appreciated!
