How to keep an outdoor cat inside temporarily

Hey! I tried looking online for this but couldn't find an answer.
Our cat recently got a very nasty infection in his back leg. He can't even walk on it. We have to give him antibiotics twice a day but the problem is he is a very outdoorsy cat, sometimes staying away for days at a time. We have to keep him inside to give him his medicine and stop the infection developing into sepsis. He is, however very unhappy with this arrangement.

Meowing 24/7 to go out, pissing on the carpet (he shits in his litter tray but won't piss) and refusing to play. I have tried everything recommended for bringing an outdoor cat indoors but it hasn't worked. (we didn't have the option of a slow transition)

How can I keep him entertained and doing his business in the litter tray until his medicine runs out? Thank you
