3 months old male cat and adopting another cat

Hi everyone!

So for some time I've been considering adopting a second cat as a companion for my 3 months old kitty and need some advice on how to (or whether to) proceed with my idea.

He's super eager to play with other animals - my cousin sometimes visits us with her two adult cats and dog, same as when my parents leave their cat with me sometimes and he always tries to play with them and follows but they don't really want to. I guess it's also cause they don't see him often and don't know him but he always gets so excited and tries to interact that it got me thinking about adopting another cat as a companion for him since it seems he would love it. Overall he's an amazing cat, super friendly and cuddly though sometimes he's in a very playful mood too of course. He demands lots of my attention walking on my keyboard when I try to work so I was thinking having a companion would also help with that as they will play together and stop needing as much of my attention lol. He also misses his mum I think cause he lost her when he was like 6 weeks old and he tends to suck on a faux fur very often. So I was also hoping maybe having another furry companion would help him.

Now the space, time and money are not really an issue here since my place is big, I have a good job and work from home. I am more wondering about (1) age of another cat, (2) gender and (3) if it's a good idea in general. Now, some of my friends own two cats and they were recommending that, same from what I read especially kittens grow up better in pairs. But f.ex. my friends adopted them in pairs so there was no problem of introducing the kittens. I understand it totally depends on a cat whether they like each other or not but I want to try and make the best decision.

I've been talking to some people - private persons who are giving their cats up for adoption for various reasons (both kittens and adult cats) and shelters. At first I was thinking about getting a kitten but then I got more into getting an adult cat. Mostly because I could already know what kind of cat it is, what personality it has and whether it likes other cats or not. With kittens it's usually unsure (and I must say I was super lucky with my kitten cause he's amazing) but f.ex. my parents' cat turned out to be a total asshole lol. Also older cats are a bit more chill and maybe they will balance each other out - though there is also a possibility they will barely interact cause the older cat would prefer to chill while the kitten would want to play.

When it comes to gender, I know some people say a female would be better cause they won't be as territorial but on the other hand I don't want pregnancy and with both male and female kittens vet recommended to wait a bit and I absolutely not want it to turn out I waited "too long" by mistake.

And as for the general idea of getting another cat - of course I'm mostly scared the new cat would turn out to be an asshole or that they won't get along. I can never know for sure but knowing my current cat is super happy and interested in other animals I'm mostly positive about getting another one.

I would be super thankful for some advice on what to do, personal stories and stuff. As I said I am in contact with few people - so there is an option to adopt a male / female kitten, a 1-year old cat, few months old cat or even 9-years old cat (with whom I totally fell in love with but not sure if they would fit together - he likes to play too but maybe a kitten would bother him or they will ignore each other and it won't make sense). Please help!

TL;DR: I own a 3-months old cat, since he seems to love playing with other animals, I was thinking about adopting another - need help with age, gender and whether it's a good idea.
