Am i introducing my old cat to new cat well?

I already know all of the ways people posted on the internet, ive read every article about it. I just want to know if its going right

I recently got a new cat. I have a 3 year old cat right now, and the new cat is only 4 months. Ive done all of the steps to introducing a new cat, and so far I heard them trill alot to each other. Ive heard thats a good sign, but once I accidentally left the new cats door open and he met my old cat. They both got scared? And they bolted the opposite ways. Is it because they got surprised? Or is it because they dont know / hate eachother? (BTW this was the 2nd day to introducing, and my old cats tail was puffed).
