Hi everyone this is my first post and I really hope I can get some help/tips and how to go about making my cat’s life comfortable. My 10 year old cat has been having loose, smelly stools about a month after I brought her in from the streets.
Some background. When I first moved into my home which was about 3 years ago this beautiful grey cat would show up in my front yard. She would walk me to and from my car back to my porch. She would also wait for me to go in the house before going about her business. Throughout those years she also had a huge wound on the side of her face that was crusted (would heal and then appear again) and drooled profusely. I wanted to take her to the vet the entire time but was unsure if the “owner” would be upset (I have shitty neighbors). What finally made me take her to the vet was when the wound was extremely bloody and she had hair loss all over her body. I took her to the a very reputable vet who specializes in cats in our area and they assured me she was in good health. The vet said she had perfect oral health for a cat who’s been outdoors and that the wound could have occurred from a cat fight and got infected. She also was not microchipped but was spayed. We got her vaccinated and up to date with all her shots and the vet gave her antibiotics for the wound. It been about a month since we have her and for the first few weeks her poop was normal.
When she lived outside I left her dry food and occasionally fed her any leftover canned food from my other cats since she looked hungry (good thing too since she didn’t have a home) and her poops were normal then as well ( I know because she would poop in this specific area of my front yard). Her runny loose stools started about a month after she has been inside. She would fling it everywhere and since she is in my bedroom it has been very taxing for me. She now has a habit of dashing away from her litter box as soon as she finishes pooping so as not to step in it, which breaks my heart knowing how stressed she is too. I find it strange because the food has remained the same but now it consists more of the wet canned food than dry food which she was fine with for the first few weeks. The dry food I feed her is the Fromm Beef Liváttini and Weruva hydrating purée canned food in the various proteins all grain free. My two boys had loose stools when they were around 1 years old but it stopped when they were fed a purely grain free wet canned diet.
I’m sure stress can also be a factor since she only stays in my room. I first thought she wanted to be outside again but when I brought her out once she ran back into the house and back into my room. I have two other cats at home (both 3 year old neutered males) and am in the process of introducing them still. Which honestly could be a whole different topic since the introduction process has been somewhat difficult. The boys are super curious so they like to sniff through the door and she’ll growl at them. I’ve never heard a cat growl before and it’s concerning as well to me. I have feliway placed in my room and hallway near my door. The cats got along fine when they played with her outside before she came in. She acts more submissive when she sees them when I tried introducing them through a pet gate at my door.
This post may be all over the place cause I’m writing this in a state of pure frustration but if I need to clarify anything please let me know! It’s heartbreaking seeing her this way since I can tell the state of her stool is also frustrating her.
