Hi I've had my cat for about 2 and half years and she keeps peeing next to the litter tray. We bought a litter tray with high sides and that helped with the problem a bit but sometimes she will still stick her bum out and pee on the side. I think she started doing this when she was little and I asked my vet about it when she was getting her annual checkup done but he just said it's behavioral. I'm a bit concerned as to how thorough this checkup was as he just felt her belly and said she was all good and then gave her some deworming tablets. She is a manx cat which I read online that this was a common problem.
