Kitten and cat *SEEM* to be playing too rough

I have recently had a kitten fall upon me. He is a male (7-8 weeks) and my cat is a female (turning 6). My female did not like him to start as most cats do not, but within three days of them interacting and scents being shared they have gotten very close. She loves him from what I can tell. She grooms him, sleeps next to him and even allows him to use her scratching posts and toys. (He was unfortunately allowed by her to use her litter box too. I don't know if this is bad.)

They play together almost every day by mostly chasing and playful swatting at each other, but recently my female has been a bit over the top. She pins him down and bites at his neck, legs and arms though I'm assuming not too hard. He hasn't exactly squealed but more lightly squeaked and somewhat growled, and I've broken them up due to that. I really don't believe she means it aggressively, because he riles her up and she makes these "playful noises" as I call them when doing so. There's no growling, there's no hissing and no other signs of aggression. I just don't know if I should be worried because he is so little and she seems to be a bit too over the top for a kitten.

I cannot express this enough when I say that she truly does really care for him, and I really don't think she is intentionally trying to hurt him.

Am I wrong to intervene? Am I wrong to leave them to semi-alone whilst playing? I really need some advice.
