Three weeks ago we adopted a kitten. This is not our first cat. We had a senior cat and have a senior dog. Our dog is very humorous and got along well with the cat.
The problem is that now that we have opened up more rooms and areas to the kitten, the kitten is intensely pretend hunting our large dog.
This is creating anxiety for our old dog who will get up and move to different rooms. The kitten follows the dog and stalks her.
All our dog wants to do is nap and I set up areas in other rooms for our dog to go to. Problem is I can't close those areas off even with baby gates. Our dog needs doors open so she can move around too as the day progresses, sometimes she likes moving into a sunnier room, etc.
I tell the kitten no, distract, redirect, and the kitten will just later resume the stalking behavior.
I know stalking behavior is normal but this is a little beyond what we typically see. I put them in different rooms, but it's kind of impossible to just keep the kitten in one room, kitten cries, kitten needs to explore.
Do I squirt kitten with a water bottle every time kitten stalks dog?
I wanted to see if there are other ideas.
I am feeling super sorry for our dog.
