Another "oh no, my pet is hurt" post, but a good one...

Alternate title: "Our weekend emergency vet visit"

Came home from being out and about on Saturday and of our three cats, only two came to greet us. The third, who would usually be right there at the door hollering for dinner (it was about the right time,) was nowhere to be found. Went upstairs, found her lying on her side on the floor in the bedroom.

Gave her some petting, she purred like a runaway motor, but didn't get up. Growing concerned, I picked her up and gently set her down on her feet, she walked a few feet and laid back down, in the middle of the doorway. Called the wife up, she gave the cat some attention, but still, the cat wouldn't get up.

So, we tried calling our normal vet, hoping they had an emergency line and we could take the cat to them. No such luck, but they did in their message, give the number of an emergency vet. So, we called. And we pulled the pet carrier out of the basement. And we loaded up the cat. And off we went on the 30-40 minute drive to the vet, with the cat being sort of her usual self and yowling about the car ride and the carrier (she does this during normal vet trips.)

We got there, and it took a while before they could take her in (they are not allowing people in with the pets still,) and let us know it might still be a little while before the vet could check her out. Once the vet did, he called us...

Well, it seems our Zoe-cat managed to dislocate / subluxate her patella, as best he could tell. He had not done an x-ray, offered to do one but did say it was likely he wouldn't see anything different than what his physical exam told him, so we did decline the x-ray. He also suggested a possible contributing factor is, well, she's overweight. Our usual vet hasn't, in the past, suggested putting her on a diet, in part I think because otherwise she's healthy, active, and in good health.

So, after they ran bloodwork before giving her some anti-inflammatories and pain meds, we took her home. There to begin the great dieting of the three cats. One senior who's showing his age and getting thin, one cat who's a 20lb ball of muscle. and Zoe...

Could we have waited until our vet was open today to take her, sure. BUT she would've spent the weekend in pain, likely having to have her own shit and piss cleaned off her (putting her in MORE pain and stress) because she couldn't move, and we would've spent the remainder of the weekend stressed out.

As of today, she's a bit more herself, we're starting to move the three of them to scheduled, twice a day feedings (right now, to make sure they're getting enough in them, we're planning to partially fill their feeder at night before bed,) and we're happy our Zoe is doing well.

Moral of the story? If you think there's an issue with your pet, DO NOT let it linger. Call your vet, discuss what you're seeing with them, they'll likely make a recommendation, either to get the pet in right away, or to monitor the pet a bit more. Don't wait, don't play the "he / she will be OK" until they're not, contact your vet or your nearest emergency vet or even a rescue if there's no vets in your area for help.

Your pet will thank you for it.
