My cat has a heart problem and has started breathing out of her mouth daily.

I got my cat Xena 2 years ago. She was diagnosed with a gallop in her heart, the vet wasn't too worried but said to keep an eye on it. Since then, more problems have developed...

Since then she's been put on daily medications; Furosemide (so her kidneys absorb more liquid) and Clopidogrel (to avoid blood clots).

A year ago, I had to rush her to the hospital because she violently threw up and afterwards started breathing out of her mouth and appeared to be really weak. This other vet at the hospital wasn't very optimistic and discussed the option of having her put down, saying that cats with her condition only tend to survive for 6-12 months from the onset of symptoms developing (at this point it had been 12 months). But I decided to go ahead with the procedures (draining liquid from her lungs / oxygen / tests) to get her back on the right path, which cost me £1300 (I can't get insurance to cover this as it's a pre-existing condition, kinda got screwed over by the rescue centre I got her from but that's another story).

Well it's been a year since that incident and 24 months since the onset of symptoms and she doesn't really seem like she's suffering for the most part. Aside from the fact she's not very active, she seems fairly content most of the time and doesn't seem to be in pain. But, her breathing is always very rapid and sharp (you can see her stomach expanding and collapsing significantly when she breathes) and over the past few months she's started to breathe through her mouth more and more to the point where she does it for about 5 minutes a few times a day now.

I'm stuck to know what to do any more. I want whatever is in the best interest for her but I financially can't afford to pay for more extensive operations and procedures. I don't want her to suffer or to have a painful death but at the same time, I feel mean having her put down if it's before her time.

Would love to just hear some other people's thoughts or advice? Or has anyone had a cat with a similar problem and what was the outcome?
