Hi everyone, I apologize in advance for the length of this post. Due to my dog’s symptoms that I’ve written below, I believe she may have diabetes mellitus type 1. I read online that this kind of diabetes is highly treatable, but usually not survivable past 8 months after diagnosis. My parents, who also believe that she has diabetes, are put off by the cost and commitment involved with treating diabetes (or even getting a diagnosis) and are refusing to take her to the vet. I am not financially independent, and cannot get her treated myself. Is there anything I can do? At this point, would it even be possible to reverse the damage that has already been done? Should we surrender her to a shelter or a foster home that could possibly get her the care she needs and deserves?
- Breed, sex, neuter status: female toy poodle, not spayed
- Age: 9, almost 10
- Weight: 14 lbs
- History: frequent ear infections (since she was like 6)
Clinical signs: - peeing many times during the day and sometimes night (and in large amounts) - peeing in the house without realizing - excessive thirst (begs for water), weight loss - increased appetite - developing cataracts?? - bumping into walls/furniture and eyes look cloudy/glassy - pee is sticky once dried and hard to wipe off the floor
Duration: - excessive thirst and urination: about 4 months - cataracts: just noticed last week, symptoms of blindness (bumping into things) started today
Extra info: - she often wakes us up at night (like 3 or 4am) and barks/cries until we give her water. However, this is difficult to handle because she’ll usually need to pee after drinking the water. She’ll usually wake up begging for water again early in the morning - I’m moving out for university this fall and won’t be home to help take care of my dog - my parents are thinking of putting her down, but I don’t think there’s enough reason to justify that as of right now (she usually seems happy and does not seem to be in pain)
If you’ve read this far, thank you so much!
