My cat Kylo is almost a year old and he has developed some behavior issues. He’s always been a very loving, vocal, cuddly cat, but he has become a bit of a menace. For example, if he’s hungry (whether it’s close to feeding time or not) he will incessantly scratch at the cupboard where his food is or knock his food bowl all over the place and meow. Additionally, almost every night he jumps all over our bedroom, knocking things off the bedside table, clawing at the curtains and running all over keeping us up all night. It’s come to a point where my husband has had enough and we just don’t know what to do. It’s so frustrating because he’s such a sweet boy most of the time, but this behavior is unacceptable.
Other examples: he’ll jump on the counter over and over no matter how many times you take him off, he’ll claw at the carpet of closed doors, he’ll jump on the counter while I’m brushing my teeth and stand right in front of me, he’ll walk all over my laptop while I’m working, and he’ll paw at open cups and knock them/other items off tables constantly without hesitation. He demands attention almost all the time and I’m worried I gave in to that too much while he has grown up.
We have tried spraying him with water, redirecting his attention etc. but nothing has worked. Does anyone have any other advice? Does he need to play more during the day? I have another cat (same age) who is very mild mannered with great behavior and they play together but he’s so much more of a handful. Does he need some sort of behavior modification plan? It’s heartbreaking because I love him so much but my husband and I need to sleep for work and we’ve reached a breaking point. Looking for any advice on how to help him be a more pleasant kitty.
