Cat...didn't throw up?

Weird title, I know. Sorry lol. TLDR: Young cat started to throw up but then stopped after seeing me put a paper towel down for him... Then started eating more

So basically, I'm wondering a bit about cats' digestion and possible reasons for why this happened. I'm living with 3 cats: a mother cat and 2 of her kittens. One, who is nearly 6 months, had eaten roughly 4 hours ago, no problems. About 30 minutes ago he started gagging more and more. Having had cats previously, it really looked and sounded like he was gearing up to vomit. I grabbed a paper towel and put it under his face, wanting to protect my carpet ( I'm leasing an apt and can barely afford rent, let alone carpet stains), but as soon as he saw the paper towel he immediately stopped gagging and got very interested in it. So interested that he seemingly forgot all about vomiting on the carpet. And then he started playing with his brother (from the same litter), jumping and running, and after that started eating more food! Like... a bunch more from his bowl!

It feels a bit like a personal attack against my carpet (and therefore my financed :| ). I know he's a cat, but why would one purposefully vomit if they could just... not? And, if it was something he had to do, why would he stop after getting distracted by the paper towel? Is it an attention thing? He gets all the attention! (okay, obviously not all, but he gets a ton of attention because he's so friendly and rubs up against everyone whereas his mom and brother don't like cuddling and attention as much)

He's a very loving, cuddly cat and he even wakes me up early by cuddling up against me. I'm just finding it hard to understand why he would do something like that if he could just not do it, which he clearly could because a second of distraction caused him to stop all gagging and start running and eating more. It's been at least 30-40 minutes and he's still playing with toys and his brother. I just don't get it :( Nothing stressful happened prior to this; he was just hanging around. Suddenly gagging, then distraction, and then he's back to normal. W H A T?

EDIT: Maybe a hairball? Despite having cats when I was younger, I don't tend to be around when cats cough up hairballs. And I certainly don't know whether they can choose the time and place to do so. I've seen a cat both vomit and cough up hairballs, but it's been a few years and I don't know how to differentiate. Thought I'd add that at the end as a last minute guess as to why this might've happened, but the same question comes up, even if it was a hairball: If he had to do it, why not do it despite the paper towel? If it needs to come out of his body, shouldn't he let it? And if it doesn't, why do it?
