Hi, I'm a single, adult male with a house and a couple of seniors (60+ year olds) and another family member who is almost 30. I need advice on which gender kitten is best. The only caveat is that 3 out of 4 family members are excited about having a kitten and the other is on the fence. The on-the-fence person is a clean freak and is concerned that anywhere that the kitten walked will be a no-go area for her (because the kitten spills and tracks litter on the carpet). She wants her bedroom off limits to the kitten (which I can understand). I have a spare bedroom where the kitten can live until of age to go around without hurting him or herself.
I had a 6-week old female kitten for a week and had to give her back because the kitten seemed agitated (and made a weird noise) to be put in the bathroom area overnight again and that freaked out the clean freak family member and myself a bit. The larger issue was the smell of the ammonia-based litter killing that spare room and my appetite. Ever since then, we've all had such remorse, and some here have cried a lot of her loss. She was adopted the same day per the shelter who gave me a courtesy call because as she put it, she saw how sad I was when I left her.
The Internet has told me that male cats are nicer than females, who tend to be more aloof and territorial (though not the case with the female kitten that I had). Males seem to be reported as more likely to play with you, sit on your lap, be petted, etc., but I know a lot of that depends on the personality of the cat.
Honest thoughts and feedback? Here's a summary below as well.
- Had a 6-week old female kitten (perfect little cat, who absolutely loved me and would only sleep when I was in the room, as far as I know, with her feet up on my arm).
- I was obsessed and spent nearly 10-12 hours a day with the kitten to play with her, help her sleep, feed her, scoop her litter, and watch TV with her (I barely ate, slept, stopped working out, barely worked....whoops..., and I could only think about her adorable little face).
- Someone is home 24/7/365. We're not vacation people....at all.
- I'd still be the main person to interact with the kitten.
- Kitten would live in bedroom on second floor before being allowed to explore house and stairs at later age. I have stair railings that overhang into the main living area, which means that the kitten may accidentally jump (after reading some of the threads here about the things that some kittens do, I'd want to be cautious).
- Need advice on the best litter to get. Had Tidy Cats ammonia-based charcoal litter and the smell was terrible unless I opened a window for more than half the day.
