My (18M) Fiance (18M) and I each have an ESA cat. As ESAs, neither of them are formally trained as service animals, but I have chronic migraines and C-PTSD, and my cat (10F, spayed, f-herpes-, always indoor) is good at yelling at me when I need to sleep/eat/feed her/etc and keeping me in a good routine. My fiance has really severe anxiety and depression, and his cat (8M, neutered, f-herpes+, always indoor, declawed [not my fiance's choice]) does similar things to keep him up and active and avoiding sleeping in his room all day.
We're currently long distance while he goes to school, and he lives with his mom on the other end of the country. He graduates with his Associates in May 2022, but he has the option to take all online classes for his second semester, so he's planning on using his spring break in March 2022 to drive cross-country with all his stuff so he can settle in and live with me in my apartment before his next term starts.
Problem is, his mom pretty much hates his cat because he's... a cat, and does what he wants on his own time. He's not a lap cat and he doesn't like to be picked up, which is what she expected of him. She knows he has herpes, and he's also a british shorthair so he already has chronic respiratory issues, but she doesn't take him to the vet unless he's seriously ill. (it's not a matter of money, either. she is VERY wealthy. she just refuses to take care of him.) My fiance will be taking him to the vet asap to get his booster shots and general checkup, but when he moves in March, he wants to bring the cat with him. If he doesn't, his mom will severely neglect him until she decides to put him in a shelter-- this is what she TOLD US she would do.
I love my fiance, and I love his cat, so I want them both to be happy. If there's a way for our cats to live together safely without his herpes being spread to mine, I wanna know how as much as possible. I genuinely can't function without my cat, so we can't just have one, but if its impossible not to spread it, I'd love to hear suggestions on how to take care of them both.
edit; fixed a small typo and clarification error.
