cat isn’t using the litterbox

Ive had my male cat (neutered) for about 6 months (he will be 8 months old soon) and he hasn’t had issues with the litterbox till recently. This started after i came back from a week long trip (i had other family members home, he usually spends the most time with me) - he basically peed in my clean laundry in front of me. Then, a week later, again in the bathroom sink in front of me, and once in my parents room. I figured it may be medical so I took him to the vet to get him checked for a UTI - they couldn’t get a urine sample so suggested I come back in a month if the issue continues. He currently has one litterbox in the basement (i’m at the pet store about to buy another one for the second floor) - today he pooped on the stairs. I’m hoping the second litterbox solves the issue assuming it isn’t anything medical (im taking him back to the vet in 3 weeks). Does anyone have any advice on alleviating this issue? It’s been very stressful to deal with and worry about where he will go next :// i don’t really believe in punishing cats (my family ((of 4 other people)) has been putting this responsibility on me to clean up and discipline him but I don’t necessarily agree with that - we’re all new cat owners. He used his litterbox normally for 6 months and even lately he’s peeing and pooping in it, just the occasional surprises every few days. Is this something that just happens? Is there anything I can do to alleviate this situation? There hasn’t been any major changes in my house or to his lifestyle that could’ve prompted this. I love my cat but this is driving me insane - any tips would be appreciated thank you :)
