Hi I just recently moved into a new place, with my cat Missey. She is not a very aggressive cat but she will defend her territory if needed. My new roommate also has a cat, and this cat was fine with me until my cat had moved in. Once my cat moved in we went through the standard introduction process, like swapping scents feeding by the doors, treats, you name it. Everything seemed okay, after a week, so we decided it would be a good idea to start opening the door every now and then and let Missey explore. However, now the roommates cat is being very aggressive towards me and Missey. He stalks her, corners her, hisses and spits at her and has been swatting at me as well.
I have never had a cat that has reacted to me like this and I have had/lived with 12 cats in my lifetime. So I'm not entirely sure how to continue. As I said before Missey will defend her territory if provoked, and the roommates cat has been cornering her in her room. I am concerned that Missey will try to defend herself and potentially hurt the other cat and/or herself. I really want them to at least be able to tolerate each other's presence, I know not all cats become "best friends" but I have never had an experience where they won't even tolerate each other.
I think it's important to note Missey herself used to live with 2 other cats and my roomates cat used to live with another cat too. Missey is a female and my roomates cat is a male, both are fixed so I'm not really sure how to tackle this issue. Thanks for any help! I'm desperate, right now Missey is shut in her room for the majority of the time and she is a very active cat I don't think it's fair to her to be limited to a small space.
