I need a list of small animal pets that live in a long tall enclosure (like a rat manor) that are low(ish) maintenance that aren't rats. Can you guys help me?

I have space for a reptile rack in my closet and then a tall enclosure next to it. I can't get rats (bummer) because the snake would always be smelling them and be stressed that he can't find them. I was thinking maybe ferrets, but I've heard they can be a lot to take care of.
