My cute gecko just died.
It had a tail infection- I don’t know how he got it because I spot clean his cage daily and never saw sign of injury. I keep notes of his temperature and humidity and what he eats and when he poops- I pay a lot of attention to him. I started by cleaning the area and applying topical antibiotics and he seemed to be healing for 2 weeks then got worse. I took him to a vet who put him on oral antibiotics and was told I could either pay $600 for a surgery or let the tail die off to the area it was injured then fall off naturally. Since I only make $1400 per month I decided to do the natural route. A week later he is dead. I’m so bummed because the vet I went to before I moved for school charges $50 for the same procedure. If I hadn’t moved I could have saved him.
I feel terrible for not getting him the surgery. I believe they if I can’t afford a pet’s care I shouldn’t have it. I never expected this to happen. I got him second hand from someone who had left him to starve 2 years ago and got him nice and fat. I don’t know what happened but I do know I hate myself right now.
I have 5 other lizards and now I’m scared that I won’t be able to afford their care if they get sick. Where I moved to the vet costs 4-12x as much as the vet I saw before. I only am here for 9 more months so I am hoping everyone holds out until then.
