TLDR: I adopted a new kitten and my resident cat has not moved from her chair. I’m also feeling a lot of anxiety and adoption regret (kitty blues?) and I don’t know what to do.
Hello!
I just adopted a 3 month old kitten and have been working on introducing her to the 9 year old resident cat. Kitten is currently quarantined in the office but the resident cat accidentally saw her the first night and has been completely distant ever since. Resident cat has claimed a chair in the house and has not moved from it and hasn’t eaten. Resident cat has also started biting me whenever I pet her which she never did before and she had a history of running away to the neighbors so I’m a bit worried. The new kitten seems fine, incredibly sweet and playful but I’ve been extremely overwhelmed by all of this. I did a ton of research on introducing cats and have tried to follow the guides but I think that first night set a really negative tone and I’m really worried about the resident cat’s behavioral change. Between all this tension, figuring out how to split my time between both animals, and having to sleep in the office to keep the kitten company for the last few nights, I’m sleep deprived, exhausted, and I had a panic attack the other night because of all of this. Frankly, I’m starting to feel a ton of regret for adopting the new kitten and I’m feeling really alone in all of this. I just worry that I’m not mentally prepared to take care of both of their needs right now. Any advice? Has anyone felt this before? What should I do about the resident cat’s behavior change and what if she’s just a cat that never gets used to their cats?
