Is a Pet Exchange a thing?

I don't have kids, but I was thinking when I do that I wasn't sure what sort of pet to get them. Like, I'd like them to enjoy and learn about and interact with a variety of animals, but I don't think I want to maintain a zoo at home.

Then I had an idea: What if we and a bunch of other families all got different animals as pets. We'd split the costs all together. Then, every 6 months or so, we swapped them around. Of course, we'd only get animals that don't care much about where their cages happen to live - like a hamster, turtle, or ant farm. But that way, over the course of a few years or so, my kids would have the chance to know and bond with a variety of pets. I don't know exactly who would adopt each animal after those few years, especially since each has different lifespans, but that strikes me as a solvable problem.

Does this have a name? Has anyone been part of something similar?
