WARNING: long post
hi everyone! i have a question for anyone who has been lemonade pet insurance user. we recently switched our cat to lemonade from nationwide, and a few days after the two-week waiting period she had an emergency situation. after many days and appointments, the diagnosis ended up being that she had a fracture in her hip due to something that was degrading the bone. in the process of this, they also discovered that she has mild hcm. she had a successful fho surgery, they did a biopsy of the bone, and the cardiologist was not recommended medication at this time, so all seemed well. we just got a call this morning that the biopsy came back and it is cancer. we do not know what this will look like at all in terms of chemo or other treatment, or even the severity of it.
in the midst of all of this, we filed several claims with lemonade (emergency vet visit, our regular vet visit, the surgery and specialist visit etc.). in theory, all of these should be approved because these were not pre-existing conditions, she had no signs of any of these things on any of her vet visit summaries from the last year, and we were outside of the two-week waiting period. however, in the process of filing these claims i had sent an email to lemonade before the surgery, just asking if the surgery would be covered. they responded and asked some questions, which i replied to, but one of them was, "Have you ever had other pet insurance for her? If so, can you please provide the cancellation notice with cancellation date?". at this time, i realized that i had never cancelled her nationwide coverage, although i had not made a claim since april. i cancelled it immediately and sent over the cancellation documents.
after all of this, i looked into lemonade's policy and saw one fairly short and vague section about them not being able to cover things that are covered by other policies. of course, at this point, i freak out because it was a simple mistake and now the other insurance is cancelled, so what if they try to deny all of her claims? additionally, even though the policy is cancelled, would they try to claim that her heart and cancer diagnoses were made while the other policy was open so they will not cover them in the future? i'm spinning a bit here because this has been thousands of dollars and we thought we were fine because she was covered. the claims have not yet been processed, so i've been twiddling my thumbs and praying that this won't be the case, but i'm nervous.
does anyone have any insight into this or thoughts? it would be so difficult if they try to not cover any of these visits/procedures, or worse, her issues in the future, because of a simple mistake. i'm not an expert in the pet insurance world, so i had no idea that the other policy would be a problem, especially because we weren't planning on claiming through both of course, and it is not super clear from lemonade's website. any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you for your time reading this saga!!
