A feral kitten, about 8 weeks old at the time, showed up outside of my house back in June. We took him in, named him Luca, and were ready to make him a part of our family. Days later we were able to get an appointment with a vet and found out that he had ringworm. The vet said his entire body lit up like Chernobyl under the light.
We have been determined since to get the little guy rid of it and healthy so that he can be a part of our family. We have diligently given him lime sulphur dips, quarantined him away from us, cleaned, scrubbed, and washed everything in our house daily, and feel like we have done everything we can to help him.
My wife, my two kids, and I got infected with it all over our bodies. We each had nearly 20 or so different lesion areas at one point. We all ended up on the oral medication to get rid of it since we weren’t making progress with the cream. Our spots subsided and we felt like we had weathered the storm.
Days after my son took his last dose of the meds, he peed blood 3 times in one day. My wife and I took him to the doctor and got him checked out but they weren’t able to say why it had happened and if the meds had anything to do with it. My wife thinks that it most likely was the medication and is scared to death about him getting reinfected because of it.
That was on August 1st. Today we found several spots on both children and a few on my wife.
It’s been 52 days now since we took Luca in and he still has ringworm and now we are starting a new wave of infection ourselves. We weren’t able to go on our vacation this summer because we were infected. We haven’t been able to really leave the house and do anything fun with our kids nor even let them play with their friends. And we were all ok with it because we all were willing to give that up to help care for Luca but now we have reached a point where we see no end in sight and are worried about our kids’ health because of it.
I don’t know what options I have here because I can’t jeopardize my kids’ health any longer and we can’t keep living like this. The no kill shelter here is overwhelmed and unable to take in anymore cats and if I took him to another shelter then I’ve read they will most likely put him down to prevent infecting every cat there because of how contagious ringworm is. I don’t know if going back outside is a safe option for him either.
TL;DR - Took in a feral kitten 52 days ago with severe ringworm and he’s still infected, we are now in our second wave of widespread infection of it, we are worried about side effects our son had from the meds taken for the first wave of infection, and don’t know if we can keep taking care of him ourselves anymore with no end in sight.
