risks of taking cat outside (stray cats frequent our backyard)?

hi, I have a kitten, mako, just under a year old who likes going outside to explore/sniff, and I also enjoy his company outside. he's up to date on all his shots, and I'm getting him on a flea preventative before next time I bring him out. so we have A LOT of stray cats in our neighborhood that we feed in our backyard and neighborhood. there's nothing obviously unhealthy about these cats, but I know feral cats commonly carry diseases/parasites/etc.

my question is if I bring mako out to my backyard where these stray cats regularly hangout, is he in any significant risk of contracting a disease? should I take him out elsewhere? or as long as I manage to keep him away from the stray cats, will he be alright? I'm going to double check with my vet, but I'd appreciate any advice.

thanks!
