Tracheal collapse in 12 year old chihuahua

My dog is my heart. I’ve had her my entire adult life. But for the first time I am genuinely concerned for her quality of life. She is suffering from tracheal collapse, causing frequent coughing, wheezing, and panting.

Her airway is gradually collapsing.

The vet proposed inserting a stint but also said there are many, many possible complications. It’s a $5000 surgery that would need to be repeated in 2-3 years. The anesthesia is dangerous for a dog her age, theres a chance that it could result in scar tissue forming around the stint, and it could cause damage to the lining of her esophagus. I’m trying natural cough suppressants, but medication choices are limited due to a heart murmur she has always had. So Robitussin is not a good option.

She still absolutely enjoys life, but every time she coughs I feel so helpless. She eats Farmers Dog, soft but nutritional food that doesn’t aggravate her throat. She is big boned, not overweight, but I have had to limit our walks and trips to the dog park and beach now. She is otherwise always in air condition, and fortunately my cities air quality is not affected by the fires. Regardless, I now have two air purifiers running 24/7.

I just don’t know what else to do. It will only get worse, and my heart is breaking. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
