I've got a few technical questions about rabies with regards to animal exposure of varying degrees, if that's okay. Hypothetically, if a young puppy, or kitten, who hasn't been vaccinated yet is exposed to a possibly rabid animal:
- Can they still be given a post-exposure prophylaxis vaccine, like we administer to humans after a bite? Is there a window where we can still successfully vaccinate, like the incubation period in humans for PEP, and will it help them? Or will it only mask/delay symptoms?
- If a puppy or kitten who HASN'T been previously vaccinated for rabies turns out to be attacked by a CONFIRMED rabid case, what will happen if they are STILL GIVEN THE RABIES VACCINE, WITHIN 96 HOURS? Barring advice geared toward outright preemptive euthanasia, which I understand is ideal, would you still recommend administering the vaccine still, or would you advice refraining from it, so we can observe for symptoms and death?
- What will happen if a puppy or kitten who is ALREADY IN THE INCUBATION STAGE, beyond 96 hours post-confirmed rabid exposure, IS STILL GIVEN THE RABIES VACCINE? Say for example, the exposure was less than a month ago, and is still incubating, would it do anything in terms of delaying visible prodromal symptoms in the puppy/kitten? That is, would it make it more difficult for second stage-rabies to be clinically visible in these pets because they were being masked, or would it virtually have no effect already?
I've already crossposted this to r/AskVet, too, because I could use the help, but their mods are—iffy, and traffic is nonexistent. Any insight is greatly appreciated, and would help me and countless others understand this so much more! Thanks in advance! x
