Adopted a 4 year old adult male cat, and he does not leave his spot at all

I adopted him at the beginning of last week, and set him up in a spare bedroom that we have in the house. In the room he has a few toys, a litter box, food and water bowls, a scratching post, and scratching box, a bed, and some blankets and towels.

He stayed in the cat carrier for the first night before venturing out, and now he spends all his time laying in the scratching box. He has moved from it, but if I or my roommates enter the room, he scurries back to it. He is using the litter box regularly. He is also eating, but he wont do it when I'm in the room, unless I put the bowl right next to the box so he can eat without leaving the box. I can also give him treats, but only in the box, he wont leave to eat them unless I leave.

If I try and play with him with any of the toys, he attacks them, but he doesn't seem to be enjoying it, and eventually hisses at them. He has not used the scratching post, or any of the blankets or towels or the bed. He just lays in that box 24/7, and looks very scared whenever anyone enters his space. I have tried leaving the door open now that it has been a week, but he does not want to venture out of his box.

I know a week is not a very long time, but is there anything I can do to encourage him to come out of his shell a little, and convince him that he is safe?

I bought him two feliway plug ins. One for his room, and one for my room and the hallway. And I go in there and read to him or sit with him every once and a while, without giving him a ton of attention. I feed him in the AM and PM, and give him some treats whenever I try to play with him.

I know he needs time, but is there anything I could be doing to ease the transition?
