Adopting friendly stray - neutering before taking home a bad idea?

Looking to take in and adopt a friendly stray kitten (maybe a couple months old) in my neighborhood. I would like to get him looked at by a vet, microchipped, vaxxed and neutered ASAP - Would it be too traumatizing to do that the same day I pick him up? Should I bring him home for a few weeks first to get acclimated to me and my space before getting him neutered? I also already have older cats that he will be joining, so that will be an additional stressor as well. Thanks for any insight!
