We adopted a 1 y/o~ cat from a shelter a week ago today. She came from a cat hoarder household and is very very shy; she had been overlooked for months because of this. We’re assuming she’s not really had much socialisation with people.
Since she came home she has been hiding behind a sofa pretty much the entire time. She only eats and poops when we’re out of the room except for about 2 occasions when she has bravely left her sofa and plodded around for a bit, looking terrified whenever we made a movement or noise.
She has an entire room to herself with lots of possible hiding places; we’ve given her a cave bed, some boxes, a cat tree with enclosed spaces, but she’s sticking to the sofa. I just wanted to know if we should block off the sofa somehow? I don’t want to push her too much but I think it could be worth helping her realize there are other places to hide that will give her more stimulation and get her more used to us.
We’ve considered adopting another cat since she’s used to being around lots, but none of the shelters have any available right now :(
