Cat suddenly violent toward other cat after 10 years of peace

I have two cats, Winston (11) and Orville (10), who have lived together very peacefully for 10 years. Out of the blue last week Orville started violently attacking Winston, completely unprovoked. There were two days of fighting and then all weekend they were completely normal again. Now we’ve had two more days of Orville pacing the house and attacking Winston at first sight, and they’re not little fights—I’m talking chunks of fur being ripped out, blood being drawn, and Winston peeing out of fear.

Aside from attacking Winston, Orville is acting completely normal. Eating, drinking, being lovable with all the humans. It’s like he just suddenly doesn’t know who Winston is. There have been no big changes in the house and no one has been to the vet recently. They’re both indoor cats.

Not sure if it’s relevant, but Orville had a week of inexplainable seizures in 2012. He hasn’t had one since.

They’re separated for now, I’m using Feliway, and they have a vet visit scheduled for Thursday. I understand the protocol of separating/reintroducing (used to work in cat rescue), so not looking for advice on what to do. I’m wondering if anyone has been through this who is willing to share the outcome and what ended up being the cause. I’m terribly worried that one of them is ill and my anxiety over all of this is awful. I’d love to hear some real stories from other people to have an idea of what I might discuss with the vet later this week.
