Dog compulsively licking cat's ear

My boyfriend and I have a year old Yorkie who has always liked licking the cat's ear. We always discouraged the behavior in the past and when we would call his name he would stop and come to us.

Now it's gotten worse. He will not leave the cat alone. If the cat is an another room or too high up for him to get to the dog will start barking and whining. The dog will even start pacing around the area waiting for the cat to come down and the second he does the dog starts licking his ear again.

I am treating the cat for ear mites, but I'm concerned that there is something else going on with the dog since he has never been this bad with the behavior before. I'm also concerned for the cat because he does not get a moments peace unless he is outside.

We have an appointment set up for the dog (for other health issues) and I plan on discussing this with them, but I was hoping there was something I could do in the meantime to discourage this behavior.

Thanks in advance!
