I have been dealing with a pretty terrible flea situation for the last several months. I have been at the very end of my patience for a while now (barely gripping on at this point), and I have no idea what else to do aside from bombing our house - which is a last resort option since I work from home and have nowhere to take my cats.
The thing is, my cats are completely indoor cats. They do not EVER go outside, and we have never had any other pets come into our current house. We also just moved into a newly renovated house in the last year (all new flooring), so I have absolutely no idea where these fleas have come from at this point.
We took our cats to the vet, and were recommended frontline plus (I prefer revolution, but they sadly didn’t sell it). We’ve been using frontline for 3 months now, and it has not worked AT ALL. After each application, I’ve only ever witnessed maybe 1 or 2 dead fleas falling off of my cats at the most, and the rest of the fleas are completely unbothered. I never bathe my cats, so that wasn’t part of the issue the first 2 applications, but I did finally break down and try bathing them before this last treatment, due to all the nasty flea gunk they were covered in. The bath helped momentarily, but they were covered in fleas and flea gunk again by the next morning as if nothing happened. I finally ordered revolution last night, which has worked great for me in the past, but I am a bit worried that the issue isn’t the brand of flea medication we’ve been using, and the infestation will persist unless we do something drastic to our house (like burning it down). Still, I am keeping my fingers crossed that revolution can work some kind of miracle.
I’ve tried treating the house with carpet powder and sprays, and I wash anything the cats lay on as regularly as I can. To give you an idea of the scale of this infestation: 1) anywhere my cats sit or lay for more than a couple of minutes will typically be covered in flea gunk, or I’ll find several fleas within a short amount of time of them laying there. 2) I am being completely eaten alive daily. My ankles, arms, and legs are bitten constantly - I probably get about 10 new bites every day and I get bitten even when I am not near my cats. It seems like they are in my clothes as I am wearing them, though I wash them after every use. 3) I found flea egg sacks on the bottoms of almost all of my shoes. I ended up washing or throwing most of them away, but that didn’t seem to help much. Sadly, this is the only place I have managed to find a source of flea eggs, as any other sources seem to be better hidden.
I’m not really sure what else to do at this point that doesn’t involve me completely dedicating every waking minute of my free time to this issue. Both me and my SO work full time, and vacuuming every inch of our house and washing every single laundry item daily is not something we have the time or energy to keep up with. I am open to bombing, but I don’t really have a place to take my cats atm (any suggestions?) and I’m also not completely sure what kind of house prep it will require. When I was a kid, my mom used regular bug bombs, and we had to be careful about covering all dishes, kitchenware, food, etc. - I remember being a lot of work prepping before and after, and I am guessing a flea bomb will require the same level of care.
What should I do? Will the bomb actually work at this point, or should I just skip straight to getting a professional involved? I am completely lost and very very exhausted (and itchy). Suggestions are welcome, though I have already heard of a few things (like diatomaceous earth) that I have not tried because they seem a bit intimidating to me. I also can’t stand the thought of putting a ton of work into doing something just for it to do absolutely nothing - like every other treatment we’ve tried so far.
