Returning a dog to his foster family after five days due to thoughts of suicide - support needed

My fiancé and I adopted a one year old dog from the shelter 5 days ago. I thought it would be a great experience as we have wanted a dog for quite some time.

However, I have anxiety that I take medication for and generally have under control. Yet since we got the dog I have been having nonstop anxiety to the point where I can’t eat, can’t focus on work and have had suicidal thoughts. My fiancé also has been sobbing profusely and feeling similar anxiety and she never has these issues.

He’s not a bad dog, he just isn’t the dog for us. And we quickly realized that. We can’t give him the life he needs. We have a yard but it is shared with other people so the dog isn’t able to roam free and get the exercise he needs.

When he was with his foster family he had a yard to play in and ways to get his energy out. He is leash reactive to other dogs…which we were not told before adopting him.

I reached out to his foster mom and she said she would take him back. Which immediately gave me a sense of relief. I just did not expect to feel this way and I feel terrible about it but I can’t allow a dog to make my mental health spiral like this. It’s not fair to him or to me.

Any advice or support would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
