my previous post got deleted, however, i believe it should not have been. I previously stated that i had considered euthanizing my 8 year old cat, vs. putting her in a shelter. the response is that you should rehome your cat, and that their are plenty of takers that would willingly adopt your cat. The sad reality is that, its simply not true. I asked co-workers, i asked friends and family and neighbors. I asked local churches, etc, etc. I went on a local DFW adopt pets website and no takers. i went onto adopt-a-pet.com website to also advertise. no takers. adopt a pet has 4200 dogs and 3200 cats up for adoption in a 50 mile radius of DFW. the 1st 4 cat rescues i called said keep your cat, because they are full and not taking any more animals. the 5th rescue i called said, if you aren't able to rehome, consider euthanizing your cat. if i brought her to a municipality shelter, technically they have to take in all animals that are brought to them, but they even stated it may take a long time for an adult cat to be adopted if adopted at all. And just because a shelter states they are "no-kill" doesn't technically mean so.
The reality is they only have so much space, and due to government funding, they have a limited budget. Do some simple math. Limited space + limited funding = some animals won't survive. To save face, and to keep the "no-kill" tag on their shelter, what do they do? They simply ship those animals off to kill shelters to keep the "no-kill" tag on their facility. Sure, some animals will be adopted, but its not as rosy as many make it out to be.
I was simply making the point, that its extremely difficult to give up an animal you loved dearly for many years. i had no choice. Literally, zero choice, for certain reasons. i simply thought sometimes quality of life over quantity is a more ideal situation for owner and animal.
