Stray / Feral / Street Cat Help

Hello All,

I have taken in a street cat and am very concerned. This is the first time I have done this. Technically she doesn't fall into the definition of a stray or feral cat. She has never had a home but was receptive to human contact and touches outside. I have seen her as a kitten and also saw her give birth to 3 kittens (she is fixed now). She is probably about 2 years old.

I decided to take the leap and take her into my apartment. Upon taking her into the apartment it took hours for her to even leave the cat carrier and once left she just went into hiding. It has been almost 2 days since I have taken her and she refuses to leave the hiding spot, eat, drink, or even use the bathroom. She seems so unhappy, if she allows me to slowly walk up to her, spend some time kneeling or sitting by her and touching her she starts trembling and is incredibly scared. She sometimes will accept the pets, but other times he just shakes and tries to slowly back away when petting her. The only time she came from her hiding spot was to try and jump out of a window and escape, she doesn't want to explore but only look for areas to escape from. I know I have to be patient but it seems like she might genuinely be happier outside with the colony of cats around my building. Are there some cats who truly just want to be outside?

To be honest, seeing how sad she is makes me want to put her back outside but it seems so unfair to her. I am lost and would appreciate any advice anyone has.

Thank you very much
