When do you think a child is old enough or aware enough to be responsible for looking after pets? What factors would you take into account?

I ask because I don't know if I was ready. How young do you think is too young for kids to start getting pets? I remember something about being 8 or slightly younger when having pet discussions. I was "eased" into in terms of responsibilities like cage cleaning and my parents tried to educate us about guinea pigs. Guinea Pigs being our first pets. But one time a few years later I remember crying and getting overwhelmed about cleaning the cage out by myself so I can't have liked having that responsibility then

(also a comment on another post if you see my history)
