Will getting another cat help?

I currently have 2 adult cats, one is a male 3years who is very friendly and playful. a year ago I went to the shelter to adopt him a friend because I thought he would need it as he seemed like he needed more play and stimulation than we could give him alone. We adopted a small female who we thought was 2(that’s what her cage said) after a vet visit we realized she was actually 8… my younger male cat always tries to play with her but she doesn’t want anything to do with him and will either run which causes him to chase (he thinks it’s a game) and then she’s scared or she swats him. They will lay close to each other (never together) and have no problem eating close it’s just when he wants to play which is a lot that it seems to annoy her. I’ve had her a little over a year now and I don’t want to do anything to stress her out considering she is a shyer cat but I have been thinking about getting a kitten to hopefully solve the issue of the younger one annoying my older cat and give my younger cat the stimulation and companionship he wants while I’m at work. Would this help and provide the one the friend he needs to leave my older cat alone or will they just gang up on her?
