Advice for potentially rehoming a cat

Hey all,

This really really hurts me to type but I’m in dire need of some input.

Long story short, years ago, I adopted this adorable British Shorthair kitten and was, and still am, obsessed with him. I’m not sure what the facility he was born in did, but he has an amazing temperament and no behavioral issues. (Of course one day he may develop them in old age, which I completely understand.)

I’d never had pets, so I really embraced the cat mom thing with him. Dressed him up, bought him trees, cuddled him all night. We were pretty much inseparable and everyone knew it.

That said, one day a coworker comes in and says, hey, is anyone here a cat person? And I lit up. Of course! Okay, will you take in this abandoned kitten I found in my yard? Thinking this cat would be just like my first cat, sure! A playmate, awesome. This is the particular cat I’m posting about.

Fast forward, this cat is and always has been mentally an outdoor cat despite being kept indoors with us. Regardless of a spotless litter box, if it’s soft, she pees. And it’s potent. We’ve tried everything from vet visits to Feliway and fancy boxes, and the most it does is lessen the frequency.

When it comes to cleaning this place, it feels like I’m taking one step forward and two steps back. Despite busting my ass, the entire house smells like ammonia apparently, which was brought to our attention during a party we threw. Friends insist on driving home tipsy or taking Ubers home because they can’t stomach the idea of staying with us for a night. The past week every single day she’s urinated on our new couch and it burns everyone’s eyes. She’s already destroyed the brand new carpet in our rental’s office/gym room. It’s a disaster.

My husband refuses to give her up, but he also works during the day while I work and go to school remotely. He wants to spray her with water every time she gets on the couch, but nobody has the time to sit there and make sure every time she jumps up she gets sprayed.

She also affects the quality of life for our original cat. Her urine, poop, and spit are all very potent. They use each other’s boxes and bowls despite having their own, and he’s forced to eat quickly because her spit on food and in water causes him to barf. She also disallows him to sit on cat trees. And thanks to her textile/carpet urination issue, neither is allowed in most rooms of the house.

This is no way to live for us or our original cat. We’ve tried- it’s been 2.5 years of trying. I really can’t do it anymore. Despite the rant, I love this cat and a shelter is out of the question. Yet, if she’s an indoor cat, this issue will likely come up with the new family as well and could lead to a viscous rehoming cycle.

I am thinking either sanctuary, an outdoor cat family, or taking her to a farmer to be a barn cat. She’s not declawed and is spayed, fully vaxxed, and extremely athletic and alert. I’ve actually seen a video of her hunt, decapitate, and eat a mouse. Any bugs or lizards we get, she hunts and eats them with ease.

What do you all suggest? I just want the best for her, but that can’t be with us.
