Choking hazard and dogs.

Tonight my little Yorkie choked on a little piece of frozen strawberry. It was a frightening experience for her and us, but she's fine now.

The signs; her mannerisms were strange, her head was angled upwards and her eyes were squinted. We couldn't hear breathing when listening closely to her chest. Worst of all, her tongue began to turn white.

The scariest part is that she was fairly silent during the ordeal, she had no way of letting us know she was in distress. I'm extremely grateful that my wife picked up on it as fast as she did.

We attempted two solutions, first I attempted swiping in the mouth/throat to dislodge it, then we attempted a swift smack with the palm near her shoulder blades. We aren't sure which was the solution that saved her life, but I'd guess the swift smack as she nearly immediately began to develop color in her tongue/gums again. My wife is studying to become a dog trainer and she pretty much instantly knew the right choice, without her I have no idea what I would've done.

That all being said, it's also possible that the heat in her body melted the frozen strawberry down to the point that it dislodged.

I guess my point in posting this is not only to relieve the stress it placed on me, but to also give an idea of what such an event involving a pet might entail to those who haven't experienced it before.

Be careful and remain calm if something like this happens. We definitely freaked out a bit, especially when her tongue began to lose color. It is completely valid to have an extreme emotional response, but overreaction won't help the situation. Calm and rational disposition/decision making will, that's one area where we definitely failed in this instance.
