My Dani was a Golden Great Pyr mix. She was my blonde bombshell. I rescued her at 2, she had been chained to a tree once her owner got her at less than 6 months. I had to sign a release stating I understood she had a history of horrific abuse. The shelter couldn't guarantee her disposition, meaning she could be aggressive. No one had seen signs of it, but I needed to know none the less. I took her bag of bones (every one was visible) home. She feel asleep in the shower while I bathed her.
Once she was dry, I slowly introduced her to Zach, our malamute. He was 10 or so and very ready to have a friend. Dani, so excited to be free ( we have a huge backyard ) ran non stop for more than 18 hours. She would stop to drink water, but would then again take off running. It made me cry to see her so excited. Zach looked at me and howled as if to say, " what the heck mom?" Hilarious.
They were inseparable. Zach passed at 18 which devastated poor Dani. She refused to eat and would lay in the last spot of Zach and refuse to move. I thought I was going to lose her too. We then got Maxi (quite by accident) a silly lab/chow mix that gave Dani new life. Dani also helped teach our daughter to walk. We had several great years.
Then, suddenly Dani was "down" one day. On the ground, refusing to get up. I took her to the Vet. She was diagnosed with a cancerous mass around her spleen. This is where she inspired me to become certified in Massage Therapy. She lived far beyond what she/I was told. Her cancer was terminal, she had 6 mos at best without surgery/chemo. She was already 12. She was a big girl so it seemed cruel to open her shoulder to hip at that age without a sure guarantee of success/survival. I was told by her surgeon to change her diet and that Massage therapy was a good way to help her until the "time" came.
Well..... the time came, 6 years later when at 18 her arthritic hip finally gave way. She led a great life until then. She met me at the door one morning, dragging her leg behind her. I was devastated, to her (in typical Dani fashion) it was an annoyance, nothing to worry about mom. We took her to the vet right away, knowing we had no choice but to let her go. Our sweet Vet gave her enough tranquilizers to take down one of our horses (1200 lb) so he could stop her heart. She refused to go to sleep. We all cried (Vet included), I begged her to let go, I couldn't fix this even if I wanted to. Absolutely the most difficult day of my life.
By far, the best pup I've ever owned. Every pup I massage now, I still think of my sweet girl and miss her dearly.
