How do you process losing a dog?

My family had to euthanize my dog (13M) today because he was too old and sick to the point of vomiting, fainting, and not eating. We weren't allowed to go into the room with him because of Covid, which is understandable. But he looked completely terrified because this was the same place we got him from, and he just saw us leave him with strangers that we rescued him from. I (27M) never got to see the peaceful look on his face like when other dogs are put down but have this image of him scared and barking at us to come back.

As soon as we got home, my dad made an insensitive and awful joke by asking where the dog was. I lashed out because as soon as you open the front door, he's right there wagging his tail with his bed behind, and my dad had to remind us our dog died. I don't know how to process this because that dog didn't deserve to be left alone like that, and I'm so angry by my dad's comment and the damn Covid protocol. Would you please give me advice?
