Kitten Introductions - need advice please!

We have recently taken home a new kitten (12 weeks, female) and we have a another older kitten which we have had for 3months (6 month, female). We knew introductions were difficult but thought the resident kitten would do better in the long term.

We have had the new kitten for 4 days, so far she has her own room, and has seem to be getting more confident each day, she was quite skittish the first day or two. We have let them smell each other and eat together through a door and pet gate. This has been fine. They have even met face to face and eaten side by side peacefully.

However often when meeting face to face, the resident kitten seems very interested and wants to play with the new one. But she is twice the size! The new kitten is often wanting to play with our interactive toys or exploring. But does not seem interested in playing with the older kitty. She hisses and growls when the resident kitty pounces on her and the resident kitty has even lightly bitten and pushed her to the ground. I do think this is all play, and no blood or fur has been drawn. But the new kitty definitely does not like it, sometimes she runs and hides in her tunnel but the older cat chases her. When we separate them, they seem to want to see each other. But it just looks like the resident, older kitty is keen on playing rough with her. We have tried to tire her out with play before seeing the new kitty, but she still pounces.

Any advice on if we should let them continue meeting? Or does the new kitten just need more time alone exploring by herself?
