So I just recently got a 5 month old kitten for my husband to bond with and my cat to have company when we are gone. He is 9 years old and used to live with cats when he was younger, but the past 6 years or so he has been a single house cat. When we moved to our house he never showed signs of anxiety like other cats do. He was immediately in his element and made the whole house his. It’s only been 5 days since the kitten has been at my house, which isn’t long I know. Originally he was hissing and swatting at me but he has calmed down a bit. Now he just avoids me and sleeps all day long. He used to follow me everywhere I went and was very vocal/loving. We are planning on letting them have their face to face in about a week and a half to see how it goes. I see a lot of people posting that their cat never gets along with their kitten and just stays permanently stressed and hides. I can’t see why they would keep that arrangement. The rescue told me they would take the kitten back if it wasn’t working. But if it doesn’t work I don’t want to wait too long to reduce her chances of being adopted to a family with an accepting cat or someone that can give her all of their time instead of split. I’m not a fan of segregation as I don’t think it’s fair. And I don’t believe in subjecting cats to stay together if they hate each other. How long should I wait if the face to face does not go well?? I don’t like thinking about giving her back but I want everyone to be happy, she is extremely sweet and deserves a positive life, and so does my resident cat if he can’t take to her.
