People who buy bulldogs and pugs - why?

I'm a veterinary technician, been in the field for over 10 years now, and I never understood what drew people to purchase bulldogs and pugs. They're always in poor health just by nature of their conformation, and have prolonged, lifelong issues that cost lots of money to treat. We would often advise clients that if they paid $5000 for their bulldog, to expect to pay $50,000 in their lifetime in Healthcare, if not more.

Did you know about their health problems prior to adoption? Do you feel that their personalities justify the costs of health care? Some people argue that it's unethical to breed them - what's your opinion on it?
