Vets unnecessary operation

So I have a 6 month male kitten and we wanted to get neutered. We took him to the vets for all his vacations and check ups and they told us he only has 1 testicle in his ball sack. We were told that the other one hasn’t developed properly and is somewhere between his kidney and his ball sack. We booked him in for the operation to remove both testicles where they would preform an ultrasound to find the testicle and then open him up to remove it. We got a phone call once they had done the operation to say that they could not find the testicle in the ultra sound so cut him open in 3 places to rummage around and try to find it. They then concluded that he was actually only born with 1 testicle. I feel like I was misinformed and that the procedure was completely unnecessary and that they should have called me when they couldn’t find the testicle and told me the options. Also I trusted there professional opinion that he needed This operation and there was never any mention of the fact he could possibility only have 1 testicle. I just feel sad that they had to cut him open in so many places and that he suffered for no reason. When we went to pick up our kitten the staff were very rude to us when we mentioned that we were unhappy with what had happened.
